Christmas hopes and fears

Hopes and fears…

Ah Christmas, what a time for mixed emotions. Shops and TV are filled with images of festive frolicking. That Christmas CD providing the constant jolly soundtrack everywhere you go.  Posters and magazines of women in gorgeous dresses, the suggestion of slinky underwear and everyone being in touch with their inner sex-kitten, having nothing better to do than work out how best to indulge themselves over the coming festive season, dancing into the night before putting up her stocking clad feet and sipping a glass of chilled champagne.  Bliss!
Cue that noise that indicates a record being scratched as the arm is pulled off it (yes, I know that 50% of you have never heard it for real, but work with me here!)

The thing is, it’s not always that blissful and, hard as the delicious older lady of your dreams might try to maintain the illusion, this can be a tricky time where everyone wants a piece of her.  An especially tricky time if she has to balance her own wants and needs with that of The Family Christmas.

There will be Jemima’s carol concert and nativity play (making costumes and attending); present shopping and wrapping for the whole world; even the buying of secret presents and getting someone to help the kids wrap them so that they’ve got a surprise to give you; the tedious secret Santa at work where you’ve got to get something for Dull Bob from Accounts; the food shopping; the decorating the house; the tree; the filling of stockings.  Sneaking around until 2am on Christmas Eve and then getting up at the crack of dawn to get the turkey on, peel the spuds… oh you get the idea.   Eventually collapse, exhausted, in a house that’s knee deep in discarded wrapping and things that have a bit missing, are the wrong size or you don’t have the right batteries and then realising you never changed into the new dress and slinky underwear you bought yourself for Christmas Day!

Maybe then is the quiet time for reflecting on the last year while the hubbub goes on around you, to recall memories of those handsome toyboys and to think about your hopes of what might come next year and fears of what might not.

Guys, if you’re worried that you haven’t heard from your lovely lady over Christmas, it might just be that she hasn’t had a minute to herself.  And if she says even though she’d love to, she can’t meet you at the moment, the chances are she probably can’t.  But while she disappears into the mêlée of Christmas, what you can do is keep in touch.  Send her messages, emails, texts, winks.  Remind her that there’s someone else that would like a piece of her too.  Don’t be afraid to tell her you you’re thinking of her and remind her of your hopes for the New Year too!

Merry Christmas!
