The Cougar phenomenon has jumped the pond. British older women are more likely to date a toyboy compared to older women in the US, but are less confident when it comes to the bedroom.

The Cougar may have originated from the US but it seems like it’s officially jumped the pond.

A survey of over 3,000 British and American single women aged over 40 have found the majority of Brits would date a man 15 years younger than themselves, compared to 47% of American women.

The survey also found 51% of British women have actually dated someone a decade younger than themselves. America may be the home of the cougar, but only 40% answered the same.>

While more Brits are dating toyboys, the cougar name still hasn’t really caught on.

Only a fifth of UK toyboy daters would call themselves a cougar, unlike the US where over half were happy with the name.

UK women claimed the cougar title was ‘predatory’ and ‘aggressive’, while many US women saw it as ‘fun’ or ‘empowering’.

The survey was co-conducted by two of the biggest names in cougar dating. British and American singles were polled by the UK’s largest dating and relationship site for older women and younger men – ToyboyWarehouse.com.

Lucy Jones, spokesperson for Toyboy Warehouse said ‘we’ve seen age-gap dating explode in recent years.

‘Many women are uninterested in men their own age and prefer younger men who are take care of their appearance, they’re more exciting and more attentive.

‘Obviously this isn’t anything new. What has been rising however is women’s dating confidence. Dating younger men and enjoying the excitement it brings is becoming the norm and many women are signing up’.

The survey was co-conducted by CougarClub’s Lucia, America’s #1 cougar expert, she says ‘it sounds like [the UK] are taking over. Quite frankly I’m surprised I thought American women were more advanced or as advanced as British women – that they would accept and embrace it.

‘It sounds like we’re a little behind, I’m going to have to work on that.’

While cougar dating may be catching on, it seems the US are still more confident when it comes to taking those toyboys into the bedroom.

39% of UK cougars claimed worries about their age have stopped them from having sex with a younger man, compared to 21% of American cougars.

Worries about being seen as attractive, having an older body type and both of those involved enjoying themselves were cited as the top concerns for many women.

However, nearly all those surveyed said they felt more confident after taking the plunge and dating younger men.

‘Guys are not as strict about what the perfect body should be as women are, we’re very strict with ourselves, we want to look perfect’ says US cougar expert Lucia.

‘Guys are not after the perfect body, if they wanted to be with a perfect body – they would be. They’re with you because of your age, because you’re older, not despite your age.

‘Also when you’re about to have sex, when you’re in the bedroom, guys have tunnel vision.

‘They’re not like ‘oh, is that a stretch mark?’

‘They’re thinking, ‘I’m gonna have sex!’, they don’t see anything else’.

The two sides of the pond had similar results when asked ‘why do you date younger men?’

Many cited the fact that ‘they take care of their appearance’ and ‘they’re better in the bedroom’ as reasons why they date younger men.

One Toyboy Warehouse member claimed ‘since my divorce I haven’t enjoyed dating at all, older guys are just boring.

‘Now I’m actually dating with confidence, I’m sexually liberated and enjoying every minute of it

‘So many of my friends are in the position I used to be in, divorced and depressed. I can’t recommend the site highly enough to them’.

The site spokesperson, Lucy Jones, says ‘it’s clear to see older women and younger men dating has exploded in the UK. We’re overtaking the US and it’s not stopping anytime soon’.
