France: Yes you love the song, but ‘Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir’ is not going to cut it with a sophisticated French single. The French are known to be proud of their flirtatious and alluring language, so getting the hang of some seemingly complicated chat up lines will stand you in good stead to woo your favourite francophone.
- Put on your best French accent (try a shot of your favourite tipple first – it helps) and get your tongue around: ‘Est-ce que ton père a été un voleur? Parce qu’il a volé les étoiles du ciel pour les mettre dans tes yeux.’ Literally this means: was your father a thief? Because he stole the stars from the sky to make your eyes. Sweet.
- ‘Si t’étais un sandwich à McDo, tu serais le Mc-nifique!’ If you were a McDonalds burger, you would be Mc-nifique. I’m not saying it’s going to work, but it’s definitely a classic.
Germany: German is often described as a harsher sounding language, but in fact it can be both humorous and friendly. Germans are often polite and classy individuals so try keeping it nice and clean with these guys.
- ‘Ich hab in der Zeitung gelesen, das Küsse glücklich machen. Darf ich Dich glücklich machen?’ I read in the paper that kisses makes people happy – can I make you happy?
- ‘Du hast schöne Augen!’ You have beautiful eyes! OK, that’s two different languages now in which you are newly able to express your appreciation for someone’s eyes but you just can’t offend with this, so keep it in your back pocket to whip out when necessary.
Italy: Here is another romance language and this one in particular is structured in such a way that it intentionally sounds beautiful. This is a massive plus as anything you say automatically resembles poetry and the pronunciation is almost the same as English. ‘Ciao bella’ is heard through the streets of Italy semi-constantly, so give yourself a chance at standing out by using one of the following…
- ‘Tuo padre farà di sicuro il pasticcere …guarda che paio di bomboloni!’ This means: your father must be a baker… look at those buns! If you’re feeling cheeky and upfront, give it a go!
- ‘Hai degli occhi belli’ You have beautiful eyes, ‘nuff said.
